In Under the Palm’s Grace, Eilen Itzel Mena draws on her Caribbean ancestry and her engagement with the Ifa spiritual practice to reimagine the palm tree as a spiritual presence holding ancestral memory and ritual knowledge. Working in acrylic and oil on hessian, she uses recurring forms such as palms, hearts, clouds, flowers and rainbows to build a visual language of movement and emotion. Moving between abstraction and portraiture, the works respond to Caribbean colonial painting while positioning the palm as a sentient guide, opening conversations on Caribbean cosmologies, diasporic knowledge and contemporary painting.
